Goldilocks

I have kinda crazy tastes, and sometimes that leads me to style awesome, and sometimes to style horror. A little obsession that's eating away at me right now that could fall either way is the 1920's bullion wig. I just can't decide if they are crazy cool or crazy bad.

I mean I remember wearing a tinsel wig in the 80's and that was decidedly crazy bad, but for special photoshoots, shows, events etc, the bullion flapper wig unusual super hit hit or terrible terrible miss?

Not sure what I'm taking about? It's these glittery beauties/beasts....

Sometimes referred to as wigs sometimes as cloches these unusual and distinctly 1920's headdresses are somewhere in the middle. The great Sydney Flapper on Livejournal was able to shed some light after landing both a bullion wig and article on the article from the seller! The 1922 newspaper clipping did indeed talk of them in terms of wigs so I guess wigs thy were? Made kind of like a hat with real metallic threads for hair they could actually be made from silver or gold!

I can't help but wonder though, with their style all puffed up once again (times seems to have been hard on most examples and flattened them out considerably) could they be strikingly cool and glitteringly deco and glam? I know I love them as art objects but are they equally lovable as fashion objects?

I've got a mad desire to make one, but hesitant about spending the $$$ on something that could be doomed to be a sparkle disaster from the get go, though undoubtedly the making journey would be an interesting one!

How do you guys feel about the bullion wig!? Bring it back or let go?

  1. I know what you mean. They are different. But I like them! And like most things I think it depends on the particular wig/item and how you decide to pull it off! That one from the V&A is uber smart. You have to do it with attitude! Go forth and wig it!

  2. If you make it, I am quite sure it will be excellent. Also, you will control how "crazy" it can get. I think they look super awesome! they are fun!
    Go for it!!

    1. Thanks, Just need to decide on color now, tarnished silver or metallic chocolate brown....

  3. Obviously try one with cheap sparkly thread first to learn, and then move to a higher-quality thread for a keeper piece that will stand the test of time...but I say, go for it! ^^

    1. I've found a good analog to proper gold bullion thread, still pricy to cover a wig, but should give the exact same look for less than gold (especially in this market) hopefully going to order the threads this week!

  4. I like it, but it looks a little...well too flat. (I know that's the style, but flatness doesn't seem to go with the texture.) I say go for it! It would be interesting to see one of these, but in a style that's more of a cross between the streamlined 20s hair and the victory roll type hair of the 40s. It would also be interesting to see this mixed in with normal hair in the same color! Or a slightly darker color! Though, it would take some serious crafting dedication to make it stand up against cheesy metallic and hair wigs, like what you see around halloween. If you were super dedicated, (and had the cash for it) you could always make some wefts from the fine metallic thread they have for machine sewing, and build the wig from the cap up. Or at least use the finer thread for the outer more visible wefts of the wig. And use slightly thicker thread to fill out the rest of it.

    1. I think a lot of the flatness in these comes from age, and with the right hands should be able to keep the deco feel with extra fluff.

Color wise the treads come in a lot of shades, from metallic brown as seen in some above, to antique metals. Definitely trying to keep it duller and more aged looking, if only for the sake of the wearers complexion! (And to keep away from Halloween wig horrors)

  5. I love sparkly, but these are a bit odd. I dunno, maybe it could work? This could be cool in a fantasy color so we'd know no one was taking themselves too seriously.

    1. I was toying with pink as a possible color, but still flipping between that and an cool antique gold (candy or decadence)
